New Date Announced

Sunday 26th February

The match between the MFC Rep Team and their Birmingham AFA counterparts recently ordered replayed by the Football Association has had the following details confirmed;

MFC Vs. AFA
Wednesday 30th November
@ Boldmere St. Michael's FC, kick off 7.15pm.

Adults £2, Junior & Concessions £1.

On confirming the game, Steve Poole (MFC Vice Chairman) said 'Our first instinct was to try and reschedule this unexpected game back the Tally Ho!.'

'At such short notice that venue was unavailable so I am grateful to Boldmere for agreeing to host the match. Playing the game at this venue allows us to keep the game central to both teams involved, and choosing a Wednesday night minimises the disruption for our club teams'.

'As the game will be played to a conclusion on the night, we have had to bring the kick-off forward to ensure we comply with the covenant on the use of floodlights at the ground.'

'We hope that this scheduling will encourage as many supporters of both leagues to attend and to provide a good atmosphere for the game.'

Rep Team Reinstated

Sunday 26th February

As a result of a breach of competition rules, the MFC committee were yesterday informed by the Football Association that the recent game between the Birmingham AFA and Midland Football Combination must be replayed.

The game has been reversed, making the MFC the home side and responsible for the match organisation, and must be played before the end of November.

This news was entirely unexpected and as such confirmed details for the match will not be available immediately. Details of the selection of the squad will similarly follow once agreed with all concerned.

Vale Win Season Curtain-Raiser

Thursday 28th July

Castle Vale beat Heather St. John's 2-0 in front of a crowd of 47 in the season opening Tony Allden Memorial Cup final tonight. Danny Tymon got both goals in the second period, on 51 & 67 mins.

The annual event sees the previous season's Premier Division winners (Heather) take on the Les James Challenge Cup winners (Vale)

The game is in memory of Tony Allden, a Highgate United player whose tragic death shocked the English football community in 1967. The following account is from the football blog twohundredpercent.

Considering the amount of physical exertion that takes place on football pitches the length and breadth of the country each year, it is perhaps surprising that that there are so few deaths amongst those people that play the game each week. Indeed, we should be grateful for the fact that such deaths are so rare that the names of those that do die playing football live long in the memory. One of the saddest of all was the story of Tony Allden, a non-league centre-half during the 1960s, but his sudden death during an FA Amateur Cup match in 1967 also brought the very best out of the game, including a tribute that would have been fitting for any footballer, whether professional or amateur.

Highgate United's FA Amateur Cup run in the 1966/67 season had already raised eyebrows by the time that they reached the quarter-finals of the competition. Playing in the Worcester Combination league, the club from Shirley, just outside of Solihull in the West Midlands, had already excelled in reaching this stage of the competition, and their reward was a home match against Enfield, one of the giants of the tail end of the amateur era, and their Tythe Barn Lane ground was spruced up accordingly for the occasion with temporary stands being added to cater for the larger than average crowd of around 2,000 spectators.

The match kicked off on the 25th of February 1967 in pouring rain, and with a thunderstorm in the distance. Enfield took an early lead, but the real drama of the day occurred after twenty-seven minutes when a bolt of lightning struck the centre circle of the pitch. Several players and the referee were felled, but the Highgate United centre-half Tony Allden had been struck. The match was abandoned and Allden was taken to Solihull Hospital, but he never regained conciousness and died from his injuries at lunchtime the following day.

The match was scheduled to be replayed ten days later, but huge media interest in it – amongst other reasons – meant that Tythe Barn Lane wasn't an appropriate venue be used and the match was switched to Villa Park. No-one fully expected that a crowd of over 31,000 would turn out for the replay, though – a remarkable tribute to a footballer that all bar a fraction of the crowd had surely never heard of – and Enfield won the replay 6-0. The result, however, was obviously not the most important aspect of the evening. Six weeks later, a testimonial match for him was played at Birmingham City's St Andrews between a Midland All-Stars XI and an International XI. Enfield went on to win the FA Amateur Cup, beating Skelmersdale United 3-0 at Maine Road after a 0-0 draw at Wembley.

than forty years on, Tony Allden's name lives on in the form of the Tony Allden Memorial Cup. After his death, Highgate United donated a trophy to the Worcestershire Combination. The league changed its name in 1968 to the Midland Football Combination but the trophy has competed for every year since 1970 between the winners of the league's Premier Division and the winners of its Challenge Cup. We should be grateful for the fact that deaths of this nature are so rare, and that those that do die on the pitch are honoured in this way. In a corner of the West Midlands, his name will not be forgotten.

Walsall Wood Diamond Anniversary & Change In Leadership

Friday 15th July

On the eve of the 60th Anniversary of their best ever season it's sad that Wood have accepted the resignation of Chairman Roger Merrick and his wife Janet from the club board. They took over the reins when David Cartwright moved to Devon and David Collins retired because of ill health in 2004.

Together with John Rogers they helped stabilise the club. Not long after they took control Wood lost management duo Steve Hinks and Andy Marlowe to Bridgnorth. Andy Roper and Ron Tranter took temporary charge and in not much more than 24 hours somehow got a side together that won their first game 1-0. They were instrumental in bringing former player Rob Mallaband back to the club as manager, he was replaced by Rob Masefield and when he left to go to Castle Vale three years ago Nigel Birch who'd been his assistant took charge and he's still there looking forward to his third season in sole charge.

Ivor Osborne, much respected in local football circles, has taken over as Chairman and there have been changed all down the line, but the club goes on with PRO BONO SILVAE the club motto (which roughly translates to 'FOR THE GOOD OF THE WOOD'), still uppermost in everyone's minds.

A new era in Wood's chequered history but one in which everyone involved at the club is looking forward to the 60th anniversary of their greatest ever season.

Amongst other things being planned is a re-union of the players from the 50's and 60's, so anyone who was involved in that era is requested to contact Bill Shaw on 07933 261 469, players already contacted include Joe Robinson (now living in Weston Super Mare), Brian Bottomer, Eric Smith, Rod Hodson, Brian Merrett, Fred Cooper, Geoff Ward and Ron Evans.

Athium Are League Sponsors For 2011/12

Sunday 10th July

The Management Committee of the Midland Football Combination League are delighted to announce the agreement with Athium Ltd. to become the title sponsor of the league for the coming season.

Athium are the software development company behind the imoSports League Management System which is now in its third season of operation in the Midland Football Combination.

Nigel Wood, League Secretary at the Combination, said "I am really happy that we have been able to extend our agreement with Athium. Their support of the league through the administration software has been excellent and I am sure that the extension of their sponsorship will be of great benefit to Athium, the league and to our members."

Lee Evans, Project Manager at Athium, said "Our company is based in the heart of Midland Combination territory but over the years our client base has spread literally to all corners of the globe. We spend more time working with clients in the United States and Australasia than we do with companies on our doorstep."

"We enjoyed great exposure last season with our imoSports brand taking the sponsorship lead. In redefining that sponsorship to promote our group as a whole I hope that we will be able to connect with more local companies."

Matthew Sewell, Development Manager at Athium, said "Its exciting to see our administration software heading into its third year of operation for the league. We continue to refine the features that the management committee and member clubs use, and we hope that the 2011/12 release will ease the administrative burden even further."

"I am also delighted that the Athium brand is now being promoted by the league through this sponsorship agreement. imoSports is just one of a family of software solutions that we have developed in recent years and, when combined with our bespoke services, I have no doubt that what we offer could be of great benefit to businesses and organisations within the MFC region."

In the coming days details of the exclusive promotions being offered to members of the Midland Football Combination by Athium through this sponsorship will listed here, and more information on Athium and the services they offer can be found at www.athium.com

MFC Expands With New U21 League

Friday 1st July

The Midland Football Combination is pleased to announce that after several months of negotiation with the Football Association they will be operating a new Under 21 league from the start of the 2011/2012 season.

It has been recognised within the National Game Strategy that there is a lack of opportunities for young males to continue within football at a suitable structured standard once leaving youth football rather than entering full scale adult football. The formation of this league will help address the identified issues.

It is therefore our aim to create a defined path for players and clubs alike to progress from Youth to Adult football.

The main points of our new division are:

3 open age players will be allowed on any team-sheet
Relaxed requirements with regards to facilities
Matches played on a Saturday between 10.30am and 12.30pm
3rd generation synthetic pitches are permitted
Aim of providing 3 match officials to each fixture
For further details please contact Nigel Wood (League Secretary) on 07967 440007, email nigel.r.wood@blueyonder.co.uk or contact Vice Chairman, Steve Poole on 07944 566046.
